President's Post 2 Nov 18, 2010- An Obituary

I did not imagine that  my second post would be an obituary notice.  I am very sad to announce the
passing away on the 17th Nov of   RAJA THEODORE  in Tiruchy.
May his soul rest in peace!
Raja was the  life and soul of our (1st) batch- and  soon, of the whole Hostel, College,
the neighbouring College of Engineering and  several Colleges in the City. His magic
accordion was  the main feature of countless functions across the city, in Colleges and
several homes. He was also an expert pianist and harmonica player. He always pedalled
his way to all the venues. I can still see him setting off on his faithful Raleigh cycle, with
the accordion perched on the handlebar..His accordion inspired many of us to dare to
sing!
He was a regular church-goer: Wesley Church, Egmore.
I  was particularly fortunate to enjoy his company all the more, as his room mate for more than
three years, till we all got single rooms in the new block behind the mess. There also we were in
adjacent rooms.. After we passed out, we were room mates in the YMCA, Royapettah when we
were doing the mandatory year of apprenticeship. After retiring  voluntarily from the BHEL Tiruchy
around 1990, he has  been practising in Tiruchy.
Raja was a gentleman to the core- affable and never a one to harbour illfeelings towards anyone.-
was naturally popular allround.  If  one were to ask who is the  best remembered by
the first 5 batches, it will be RAJA.
He leaves behind his wife Shantha, a son( who is in the USA) and daughter (in Ludhiana)-( I was
fortunate to have met Raja  a couple of months ago,in Ludhiana, when  he was visiting his daughter)
On behalf of all SAPIANS, I am conveying  to the family, our heartfelt condolences.

Felicitation of Ar. Udaya Kumar (Rupee Symbol Designer) by Anna University & SAPAA on 12th Nov. 2010

EC Meeting 09-11-2010

I think we are off to a great start this biennium - we had the AGM in Sep where the new office were elected and since then we've already had two EC meetings in Oct and Nov respectively. Hats off to Teeveepee our new President for all the motivation!!

Yesterday's meeting was attended by the following office bearers and members

1.  Solomon Vedamuthu - Vice President
2.  Kalpana R Shanmugham - Secretary
3.  Md. Khalid - Jt. Secretary
4.  V Jeyasandrababou - Treasurer
5.  Monsingh D Devadas - Ex-Officio
6.  Mythilli J Babou - EC Member
7.  Priya Sashidharan - EC Member
8.  Xavier Benedict - Past EC Member

Apologies were received from the President - TV Prabhakaran who is out of the country and Pravin Aiana - EC Member who was indisposed.

It is placed on record that though physically absent, Mr. TVP was present in spirit through his telephonic participation and received an overview of the meeting's proceedings.

- Mr. Benedict was mainly present to update us on the One Day Conference on Sustainable Tourism & Cultural Heritage being organised by AARDE Foundation in collaboration with the School of Architecture & Planning, Anna University, Chennai with support from the Embassy of The Netherlands, New Delhi, on November 12th 2010 at Museum Theatre, Chennai.

The Inaugural function is at 9-00 am which will be addressed by the Vice Chancellor of Anna University, Dr. P Mannar Jawahar. This will be followed by a Felicitation of Ar. Udaya Kumar (the Designer of the Indian Rupee symbol), by Anna University and SAPAA.

Ar. Udaya Kumar is an alumnus of SAP and has done us all proud with his achievement. SAPAA is proud of you Udaya Kumar and we salute your achievement!

There are many more interesting events through the day which includes the screening of an award winning short film - Pulicat & Sadras - which was made by yet another alumunus of SAP.
More details of the events are available at - www.aarde.in - and the invitation will be uploaded on this blog soon.

SAPIANS, please attend the function in large numbers to strengthen the solidarity of our architectural fraternity.

- The matter of meeting the VC about land allotment by Anna University to SAPAA for putting up its own office premises was once again raised by several members of the EC. It was decided to immediately form a core group of members to meet the VC by appointment, but this was deferred slightly as the SAPAA President and Prof. N Altaf Ahmed, two senior members are unavailable till next month.

- Some members raised queries about the effective usage of funds available with the SAPAA Trust. The Vice President, Solomon Vedamuthu briefed members regarding the status - he said the Trust was waiting for a formal intimation from the Income Tax Dept., before the funds could be deposited in Fixed Deposits. The funds are now in Savings Bank Accounts and will be till such time. This is being followed up by the auditor. A joint meeting between SAPAA and SAPAA Trust EC members was proposed to settle this matter as soon as possible.

- It was decided to contact 4 to 5 batches who graduated after 1984 to request them to host an Annual SAPAA Dinner. It was suggested that it should be held in honour of the fresh graduates passing out every year and make it a grand non-missable event which every fresher would be honoured to be invited to. The time suggested was sometime in June of every year.

- It was suggested that the SAPAA Byelaws be available online - maybe in this blog itself, so that all SAPAA members have access to it at anytime. Md. Khalid has been given the responsibility of uploading details of the present SAPAA office bearers and EC members and the Byelaws.

- Prof. Monsingh requested action towards participation in the Cul-de.sac Culturals. Mr. Solomon Vedamuthu has taken responsibility of contacting and co-ordinating SAPAA talent for participation in this event.

Intro Blog

Hello SAPIANS

We have started this Blog to help us all be involved with the activities of SAPAA.

The last AGM on 24th Sep 2010 was very encouraging with more than 65 Sapians attending. Let us keep at the same speed in attracting more of our alumni to SAPAA to make us at least 1000 strong!

Our incoming President, Ar. TV Prabhakar, came up with this novel idea of starting our own blog! We intend to keep it posted with all activities of SAPAA, including the matters discussed at the EC meetings.

We want to make this an interactive forum for all SAPIANS to share their thoughts, experiences and even their work for the benefit of our SAPAA community.

Looking forward to some great blogging with all your support!
